WASHINGTON — May 8, 2026

President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine will implement a three-day ceasefire, a move he described as potentially:

“the beginning of the end”
of the war that has lasted more than four years.

According to a Truth Social post on Friday, the ceasefire will take place on:

  • Saturday,

  • Sunday,

  • and Monday,

coinciding with the time both Russia and Ukraine hold activities related to the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

President Trump said:

“This ceasefire will include the cessation of all military activities and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. This request was made directly by me.”

Earlier in the week, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky both announced plans for a temporary ceasefire.

President Trump added:

“Hopefully, this will be the beginning of the end of this long, bloody, and brutal war.”

He also stated that negotiations to fully end the conflict are ongoing and:

“we are getting closer every day.”

The Russia-Ukraine war is currently considered the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.
