The federal government has taken another significant step in the plan to issue a commemorative coin for America's 250th anniversary, featuring President Trump on a 24K gold coin after the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved the design.

The decision was approved unanimously, paving the way for the U.S. Mint to prepare for production. The obverse design depicts President Trump with clenched fists at his desk, with the word “LIBERTY” inscribed above, based on his portrait displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The reverse features an eagle preparing to take flight—a familiar symbol of the United States.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach stated that the coin is intended to honor the national spirit for the 250th anniversary milestone, and the image of the sitting president is considered a fitting representation of the current era.

Some commission members suggested the coin's size be “the bigger, the better,” reflecting a trend for prominent commemorative designs for this anniversary edition.

President Trump has approved the design, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to sign the official order to proceed with minting. The final scale and technical specifications will be determined by the U.S. Mint.

However, controversy emerged immediately after the announcement. Some members of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) argued that placing a sitting president on a coin goes against long-standing U.S. tradition and could face legal challenges if the full approval process is bypassed.

In history, President Calvin Coolidge appeared on a coin while in office in 1926 for America's 150th anniversary—a rare case that was highly debated at the time.

The U.S. Mint has not yet announced an official release date.
