A former fighter pilot from the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) warns that Iran could carry out retaliatory attacks right on US soil using a network of sleeper agents and drone strikes.

Former pilot Matthew Buckley believes this risk is no longer hypothetical.

“It’s not a matter of if—it’s a matter of when.”

The warning comes after intelligence reports emerged indicating that Iran may be preparing attack plans targeting the state of California.

Suspected thousands of “sleeper cells”

According to Buckley, Iran may have infiltrated many agents into the US over the past several years.

He says the number could reach:

  • thousands, or even tens of thousands of people
  • many who may be awaiting orders from Tehran

Some sources within U.S. Customs and Border Protection have reportedly warned about detecting signs that elements linked to Iran may have crossed the border into the US.

Drones could become dangerous weapons

According to Buckley's warning, Iran could also use cheap drones to attack domestic targets.

Vulnerable targets include:

  • shopping malls
  • schools
  • churches
  • airports
  • crowded events

He argues that even a swarm of low-cost drones could pose a major danger if they attack aircraft taking off or landing.

FBI monitoring attack risks

According to previous reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has sent warnings to law enforcement agencies in California regarding the possibility of Iran preparing drone attacks.

However, federal authorities stated that this information is based on unverified intelligence.

US security agencies continue to monitor terrorism-related risks amid the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
