Weaver D's Ceases Operations After Nearly Four Decades

Two long-standing culinary icons in downtown Athens are preparing to conclude their decades-long journeys, marking a significant turning point for the East Broad Street area.

Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods, the soul food restaurant associated with the slogan "Automatic for the People" — which inspired the classic R.E.M. album title — ceased operations on February 28. Owner Dexter Weaver is retiring after nearly four decades in business, according to OnlineAthens.com.

The property has been sold. Joe Nedza, owner of the Baddie's Burger House brand, acquired the location. He wrote on social media that the site could either be demolished for parking or student housing, or preserved to continue operating as a restaurant to maintain the space's "soul." Baddie's currently has three locations, including two in Athens and one opening soon in Gainesville.

DePalma's Closes East Broad Street Location After 38 Years

Not far away, DePalma's Italian Cafe closed its East Broad Street location on February 27 after 38 years of operation. Owner Dave Cappi sent a message to customers, calling the time spent running the restaurant one of the most profound experiences of his life, second only to marriage and family. He stated that the restaurant taught him that the greatest value lies in people, conversations, and connections.

Cappi plans to slow down to spend time with his family, including two grandsons on the way. The downtown DePalma's space will not remain empty; local entrepreneurs Daniel and Brandon plan to open a new concept called Pompeii in March and have offered to retain the current staff.

The two DePalma's locations on Eastside and Timothy Road will continue to operate.

A Turning Point for Downtown Athens

The departure of a soul food restaurant tied to Athens' music history, along with the closure of a nearly four-decade-old Italian cafe, marks a transformative moment for the city center.
