GWINNETT COUNTY, GEORGIA – A 29-year-old Winder mother is facing reckless conduct charges after her 4-year-old son accidentally shot himself while they were both in a car in Gwinnett County.
According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report on February 20, 2026, the incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, February 18, in the 3000 block of Braselton Highway.
Boy Retrieved Gun from Car's Glove Compartment
Gwinnett County Police Department officers stated that upon arriving at the scene, they made contact with Nicole Johnson, 29, a Winder resident. The mother reported that she was eating breakfast with her son in the car when the gun unexpectedly discharged.
According to preliminary investigation results, Johnson was on the phone and did not realize her son had opened the car's front storage compartment (glovebox) and retrieved a handgun. The child then pulled the trigger, causing the bullet to strike his own hand.
Injury Not Life-Threatening
The boy was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed the injury was not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Following the investigation, police arrested Johnson and charged her with reckless conduct. She was booked into Gwinnett County Jail and later released on bond.
