A woman died after a broad daylight stabbing attack at the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Oakland City station in Atlanta on May 30.

According to officials, MARTA police received a report of a broad daylight stabbing just after noon at Oakland City station. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the victim with severe stab wounds. Medical personnel performed first aid, but the woman did not survive.

In a statement to the media, MARTA called it a “senseless act of violence” and extended condolences to the victim's family and those who witnessed the incident.

The suspect was arrested by MARTA police at the scene. However, officials have not yet released the identities of either the victim or the suspect, nor have official charges been announced.

The incident caused train service at Oakland City station to be suspended for several hours for investigation.

Oakland City station is located about 4 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta and serves MARTA's Red and Gold lines.

Some passengers believe that increasing violence on public transit systems is linked to many people entering stations for free, including the homeless.

“There needs to be more security. They need to control it more tightly because the situation is getting worse,” passenger Mantonio Huff told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Saturday’s fatal stabbing occurred less than a week after another assault at a train station near the Georgia State Capitol.

The consecutive incidents have left many passengers concerned about safety when using MARTA.

“I don’t understand. Too much violence,” passenger Joseph Turner told WSB-TV.

MARTA stated that their police force is continuing the investigation and is committed to protecting the safety of passengers and employees within the system.
