11-Year-Old Child's Body Found Near Boat Accident Site
LAO CAI — On the morning of February 22, 2026, authorities found the body of an 11-year-old child involved in a boat capsizing accident that occurred the previous afternoon on Thac Ba Lake. Five people are still missing, and search and rescue operations are being urgently carried out.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Secretary of Cam Nhan Commune Party Committee, confirmed that all 22 passengers and 1 boat driver were residents of Ngoi Song village, Cam Nhan commune. The people on the boat were relatives.
Returning from Tet Greetings, Accident Occurs on Lake
According to information from the commune authorities, on the morning of February 21 — the 5th day of the Lunar New Year — a group of 23 people went to the Yen Bai City (old area) to offer New Year greetings to relatives. Later that afternoon, as the group returned by boat across Thac Ba Lake, the vessel encountered an issue and capsized.
By the following morning, the body of the 11-year-old child was discovered near the accident site. Local authorities immediately coordinated with relevant agencies to scan the entire lake surface and surrounding areas to search for the remaining five people.
Cause Undisclosed, Difficult Search Conditions
The exact cause of the boat capsizing is still under investigation and has not yet been announced by authorities. Rescue operations are facing challenging conditions due to the vastness of Thac Ba Lake, coupled with the impact of weather conditions on the lake which could hinder the search process.
