NEW DELHI, India – June 3, 2026
At least 21 people have died and many others were injured after a massive fire broke out in a building in the capital New Delhi on June 3.
According to local police, the blaze erupted in the Malviya Nagar area in the southern part of the city. The building housed a restaurant on the ground floor and a hotel on the upper floors.
The area is densely populated, with a high concentration of students and young workers.
Firefighters deployed at least 8 fire engines to control the flames. Over 40 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Images from the scene showed thick black smoke engulfing the building as firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze.
Some trapped individuals were seen climbing out of windows, screaming for help amidst the fire and smoke.
Local residents also participated in rescue efforts, helping to bring victims out and transport the injured to safety.
Officials stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway.
Local media reported that among the victims were many foreign nationals who had traveled to New Delhi for medical treatment and were staying at hotels in the area.
New Delhi is a popular destination for many international patients due to its lower healthcare costs compared to many other countries.
