Former UK Ambassador to US Peter Mandelson Released on Bail After Arrest in Epstein Investigation
LONDON — Former United Kingdom Ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson has been released on bail after being arrested for questioning. The incident relates to allegations of sharing classified information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Plainclothes police appeared at his home in southwest London on Monday. He left the police station at 1:15 AM on Tuesday, after approximately 9 hours in custody.
Investigated for “misconduct in public office”
Mandelson was arrested on suspicion of “misconduct in public office,” a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted under English law.
According to British media, during his detention, he underwent standard procedures including being read his rights, DNA sampling, fingerprinting, and mugshots. Prosecutors and police are reportedly continuing discussions about potential formal prosecution.
Allegations of information leak in 2009
According to emails previously released by the US Department of Justice, Mandelson is accused of providing sensitive market information to Epstein in 2009. At the time, he held a position in the British government.
The documents show he discussed how the British government raised funds after the financial crisis and mentioned the possibility of lobbying to reduce bankers' bonus taxes. Mandelson has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
Increased political pressure
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure after appointing Mandelson as ambassador to Washington. Some Labour Party members had previously warned about Mandelson's relationship with Epstein.
Morgan McSweeney, Starmer's former Chief of Staff, resigned following controversy surrounding this appointment. Mandelson served under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and had previously resigned twice over financial and ethical issues, though he denied breaking the law. The investigation is currently ongoing.
