The 26-year-old heiress to a renowned German shipping company was found dead from a gunshot wound at her family's luxurious wildlife reserve in South Africa, just one day after the estate's financial manager was also found deceased under similar circumstances.
The victim was identified as Caroline von Rantzau, heiress to the Hamburg, Germany-based shipping company Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL).
According to South African police, she was found deceased in her private room at Leeuwfontein Estate in Limpopo province on June 1, 2026.
Prior to the discovery of her body, multiple gunshots were recorded at the estate, which promotes sport hunting activities in South Africa's renowned safari region. Investigators believe she was shot with a .357 caliber hunting rifle, a type of firearm reportedly found in her father, Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau's gun cabinet.
What makes the incident even more mysterious is that just hours earlier, Arno Koën, 44, the estate's financial manager, was also found deceased from a 9mm gunshot wound on May 31.
German media described Koën as a close mentor and a father figure to Caroline. He was responsible for financial management and bookings at the reserve.
South African police stated they are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death and to consider the possibility of additional suspects.
To date, authorities have not announced any arrests related to these two deaths. Initial reports suggesting Caroline died in a car accident were later confirmed to be inaccurate.
Caroline von Rantzau was reportedly building her own real estate portfolio in South Africa and had just acquired two more properties near the Mozambique border. She spent most of her time caring for animals at the family reserve, home to various species of antelope, horses, wildebeest, mongooses, and native birds.
The case is still under investigation, and no official conclusion has been reached regarding the connection between the two deaths that occurred consecutively at the estate.
