JERUSALEM – Israel will not withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon under the new peace agreement between the United States and Iran, despite demands from Tehran. This was confirmed by an Israeli source to The Jerusalem Post on June 15.

According to Israeli military sources, if Hezbollah adheres to the current ceasefire, Israel will cease all military operations in Lebanese territory.

“If Hezbollah respects the ceasefire agreement, there will be no attacks anywhere on Lebanese territory,” said a source within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The information comes as the United States and Iran have just reached an agreement to end the war that lasted more than three months. According to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's statement, the agreement includes the cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.

However, Israel has shown its own stance on the issue of northern border security. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet made an official statement regarding the US-Iran agreement or the terms related to Lebanon.

Just hours before the US-Iran agreement was finalized, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Katz ordered the military to conduct airstrikes in the Dahiyeh area south of Beirut in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah towards Israeli territory.

In this airstrike, Israel claimed to have killed Ali Musa Daqduq, a senior commander of Hezbollah.

Israel asserts it will not tolerate any attacks on its territory. However, the airstrike in Beirut, occurring just before the peace agreement was announced, drew a reaction from President Trump.

On Truth Social, President Trump wrote:

“This morning's attacks should not have happened, especially at a time when we are so close to a peace agreement with Iran.”

President Trump stated that Israel has the right to self-defense, but opined that the threat Israel cited in this case was “very small and insignificant.”

These new developments indicate that while the US-Iran agreement opens up prospects for de-escalation in the region, the situation in Lebanon and the relationship between Israel and Hezbollah will continue to be factors that could affect the peace process in the near future.
