Over 30 Dead, Clashes Reported in 20 of 31 States
Widespread violence has erupted across Mexico after notorious gang leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, died during his arrest; at least 20 of 31 states have reported clashes, over 30 people have been killed, and US citizens in several areas have been advised to shelter in place.
El Mencho — leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel — died on Sunday after Mexican special forces arrested him in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. He was gravely wounded in a shootout between army commandos and his bodyguards, and subsequently died en route to Mexico City.
Cartel Declares War, Blockades Guadalajara
Cartel members have declared "war" on President Claudia Sheinbaum's government, blockaded Guadalajara — the capital of Jalisco and the country's second-largest city — and engaged in continuous clashes with security forces. The violence quickly spread along the west coast, nearing the US–California border. Authorities have confirmed at least 30 deaths; the actual number may be higher.
US Citizens Ordered to Shelter in Place
In Puerto Vallarta, US citizens have been ordered to shelter in place as drug gangs flooded the resort area. Videos from various localities show burning buildings and vehicles; tourists queued extensively at airports attempting to leave Mexico.
President Sheinbaum Speaks: Situation Gradually Stabilizing
On Monday morning, President Sheinbaum spoke for the first time following El Mencho's death: "The most important thing right now is to ensure peace and security for all Mexican people." She affirmed that the situation is gradually stabilizing, and the government and armed forces are coordinating closely to maintain order.
US Provides Intelligence Support for Operation
Mexico's Minister of Defense thanked the US for its support in the operation. According to the White House, the US provided intelligence. General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo stated that the intelligence process was "complex, required significant time and various sources," and confirmed that Mexico maintains close communication with US armed forces in this area.
Authorities continue their investigation and urge the public to comply with security guidelines.
