Spanish authorities have deployed divers to search for a missing American student near the Barcelona beach area, right next to the nightclub where he was last seen.
According to the investigation, James Gracey, 20, a student at the University of Alabama, disappeared after a night out during Spring Break. He was last seen around 3:00 a.m. near the Shoko nightclub when he left the area and headed toward the beach.
The search is currently focused on Somorrostro Beach, which police have cordoned off for the investigation. Diving teams reported that underwater conditions are very difficult, with visibility limited to only a few dozen centimeters, posing a major obstacle to the rescue operation, similar to cases of searching for missing persons in parks or riverbanks.
⚠️ INVESTIGATION LEADSAuthorities are considering the possibility that the victim met with an accident in the water after moving toward the shoreline.
However, the investigation has also expanded to other possibilities, as reports suggest Gracey left the nightclub with another individual before contact was lost. The case has sparked public concern, similar to the case of the missing Michigan State student that prompted a massive search effort.
📍 KEY CLUESPolice said they seized Gracey’s phone during a related arrest but have not confirmed a direct link to the disappearance, unlike the case of the kidnapped toddler found safe thanks to quick leads from the scene.
Additionally, there were reports of the victim's wallet being found near the sea, though the family stated they have not confirmed this information.
👨👩👦 FAMILY AND UNIVERSITYGracey's family has arrived in Spain to coordinate the search. His friends and the student body have expressed their concern but remain hopeful.
The University of Alabama stated they are providing as much support as possible to the family and those involved.
